Activation Error

The Windows Vista activation will not work on my Compaq Presario X1000
laptop. I know that I've typed my product key correctly, but it keeps
telling me that my product key is in use. I tried clicking "change product
key" and retyping the key, but then it kept telling me that the key is
invalid. Then it locked me out of my computer, and kept asking me for the
product key when I started my computer. Each time I typed it, it still told
me the key was invalid. I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled Vista.
Now, I'm back to the same problem with it telling me my key is in use.

Later, I tried installing Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion desktop computer.
I used the same key, and I didn't have any problems at all. Windows
activated successfully. Why would the activation work on the desktop
computer, but not on my laptop?

Todays Windows Update fixes that.
