Activating XP by dialup internet .....

Is it possible, or should I do it by phone?

This is a desktop computer so I cant take it to a wifi spot, and do not
have affordable access to faster internet out here in a rural area.

It should activate with any connection that can reach their server.

Just be aware, that occasionally, an IE6 scripting error will pop up,
and if that is the case, you may need to download and install IE8 for WinXP.
Then when you do the activation thing, it'll work. That's what happened
to me, on a WinXP Repair install here.

My main reason in getting rid of Win98 for internet use was because no
matter what browser I used lately, would cause scripting errors almost
every 10 minutes. I'm tired of that shit....

I fully intend to upgrade IE. I never could stand IE6. Thanks for that
link. I was not sure what ver to use. I have heard that IE 8 is much
improved over 6.

Just curious, what would happen if I tried to activate with Firefox?
(DOES USING FF PISS OFF MS)

One other thing, after XP is retired in April, what will happen to the
activation? Will MS still offer it, or will they discontinue it (which
would make all new installs of XP impossible).

I thought my issue was, the Microsoft activation stuff, uses
Internet Explorer specific features (like perhaps, ActiveX).
And that requires Internet Explorer to be working, and none
of the security settings to be fouled up. I think by installing
IE8, it just corrected a security setting for me, that allowed
the activation script to run.

Maybe your setup wasn't broken like mine, and you won't have a problem.

I haven't a clue on the activation thing. The history of the
computing industry, is not really all that good on the issue.
Once the support period is up, they can do whatever they want.
I don't know if consumer protection laws are sufficient
to stop them or not.

I could see both the Windows Update and Activation continuing
to work for a year. It's the longer term I can't guess at.
The Windows Update would just be offering updates from
April 2014 or earlier. No new updates should come out.

It would really be nice, if they did a Rollup package,
like with Win2K (it's like a Service Pack, but lighter).
I expect Microsoft is too busy flailing about with respect
to their future, to really care all that much. Their master
plan calls for huge Win8 adoption, which isn't happening. And
they have no "Plan B". Their marketing person was just let go (Tammy).

I just installed it today, and aside from changing the looks, I have not
done anything else. I'm still downloading from my Win98 computer, until
I figure out how to setup the dialup on the XP machine. I'm downloading
the 16m IE8 now, that will take over an hour.

forever....

I agree about the rollup package. On dialup, there is no way I can add
all the upgrades. I CAN install SP3 though. I downloaded it to my
laptop at a WIFI spot. From what some people on here have said, I'm not
sure if I should install it or not.

I could download all the security upgrades at a WIFI, if I knew which
ones to get. There are so many!!!!
I wonder if someone who is really a computer expert might make a
packaged upgrade. I know someone did it for Win98, but it was not MS.

of them NOW, before they are gone..... I could see burning them to CD,
but that might take many CDs. ??? I'm not sure......

Also, have IE8 on both XP machines and the 7 machine.
