Activating OEM Win XP on a new hard drive

My friend bought a legit OEM version of Windows XP Pro to install into his
self-built PC about a year ago. Now his hard drive is giving him some
problems (bad sectors) and he would like to replace the drive completely
(retaining original motherboard and CPU). Questions -
1.) When he replaces the hard drive how does he go about with the windows
reactivation?
2.) Can it be reactivated with no hassle online just like the first time he
did it?

The same way he did, the first time he installed the OS.

did it?

I've replaced my video card, sound card and motherboard
(but same CPU and memory)
The replacement motherboard and the old motherboard
both used the SIS chip set (was 735, now 748)
I had to reactivate my Win XP OEM after motherboard swap.
But it did not even ask for the serial number.
