action canceled page-sign-in

When I sign in to MSN, the "Action Cancelled Internet Explorer was
unable to link to web page" is displayed. This happens on both my box
and my wife's. Both have XPpro installed.
We have to use a favorite assigned to the MSN home page, to connect.
Before this happened, after signing in a notice would appear that no
connection was made and I would have to work offline even though I'm
online. If I opened IE
surfing was normal.
Have cleaned using Avast anti-virus,ad-aware,spybot
