Is there any way to set up a Gateway 500XL with ACPI so
that it DOES NOT power down the PC when shutting down XP
Pro?

Maybe it wold affect the amount of time he would be willing to spend on
finding an answer for you. One method is to do a repair reinstall, and
leave out ACPI (when at an early stage it asks 'Hit F6 to install
special driver' hit F7 instead'). That will install APM instead but
leave it disabled
