ACPI

I installed a software called RS Linx from Rockwell
Software on my Dell Inspiron 8500. It will not run with
ACPI enabled. Dell tech support can't help me disable
this so they referred me to you. I need instructions on
how to disable ACPI.

Thanks: Mark Merrill

P.S. This is an urgent matter, I would appreciate a
quick response. Thanks

ACPI mode (HAL), is determined at the time Windows
XP is initially installed. XP polls the BIOS to determine
if the PC is Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
compliant. Based on this, Windows XP loads a hardware
Abstraction Layer for your PC. The entire sub-system of
your PC is configured based on this initial data. Once it
(XP) is installed, it is possible to change HAL's, but the
recommended solution is a "Repair" install and force XP
to use a manually defined HAL (Standard PC). However,
not all BIOS's will allow the user to disable the ACPI
mode. This is an advanced operation, that if done wrong
can leave your machine un-bootable. This is a case where
you are going to the wrong source for a solution. I would
recommend you contact the software vendor and see if
they have a "fix" or patch to resolve the issue. Changing
the HAL is an extreme measure to get a program to work.
ACPI is a more advanced operating mode for a PC, if you
change it back to a "Standard PC", you are loosing some
functionality, especially related to IRQ handling.

You can't turn it off without re-installing XP so that it uses a
"Standard PC" HAL. Any software designed so that it can't be used
with ACPI is not designed very well. So much for Rockwell......
