I have a problem with one of my computers freezing up on a regular basis. This computer was upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro. The event viewer says under system error ACPI and nothing else. I have removed all of the start up programs and just about everything else. I have been told conflicting info about whether the bios needs to be flashed to a newer version. Some say thats not the problem and even the Mobo manufacturer said to reinstall Windows XP. My other computer is fine and was also an upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro. Since I bought the Windows Upgrade version and it is now registered, can I install a fresh install of Windows XP Pro? I know I can't go back to 2000. Moesee

goto your motherboard manufacturer's website and get the latest bios
and see if it resolves this problem.

I have gone to my manufacturer's website and they do have a new Bios. My question is whether I should update that Bios or leave it alone. If I have to flash the Bios I may need some assistance so that I don't mess up my computer. Thanks for your response.

It is probably easier to do so. The alternative is to do a repair
reinstall of XP and leave out ACPI in favor of the older, simpler APM
(you hit F7 when it suggests 'Hit F6 to install special drivers'). But
that means running all XP updates again so it is tedious to say the
least

To flash BIOS, get the download from the maker - probably a zip file to
save and then open to extract the contained a flash.exe program and a
data file. Make a bootable floppy by putting one in the drive, then
r-clicking the floppy drive icon in My Computer, take Format and check
the MSDOS Startup disk box. Then copy those extracted files onto it.

Set the BIOS to boot floppy first, put in the floppy and boot it. Run
the flash program.

First action - make a backup of the existing BIOS, then run and tell it
to update using the data file on the floppy. If there is *any*
indication that this does not fully succeed, run the program again to
restore the original BIOS - *DO NOT* reboot until that is done
