accidentally deleted email by moving to the "mailbox" non-folder

I moved emails to the the heading called "mailbox" which is the heading under
which the folders are listed, and the emails were apparently permanently
deleted.
They are not under the "recover deleted items" feature because they were not
deleted from the "deleted items" folder.
1. why would Outlook allow a user to move emails like that without warning
that they are going to a non-folder (black hole) where they will be deleted?
2. anyway to recover the emails?
Thanks.
