I am working on an emachine (yuk, but not my pc) w/windows
2000 sp4. Any time I try and access the modem, the pc
reboots. Anyone out there have this problem before?

Sounds like you might have the msblast Virus/worm. Before
trying to access the modem, see if "msblast" is running as
a process on your machine, and if it is, kill the process,
and do a search for msblast.exe and delete the file. Also,
if you found it, download and install the MS patch agaist
reinfection, and delete msblast and any lovsan entries in
your registry. Good luck!

Patrick,

Thanks for the info, however, my system doesn't reboot
randomly (only when trying to dial out, or attempting to
change modem properties), and as this is a FRESH
installation of windows 200, and the system has never been
connected to any other system, I doubt that it has been
infected. Does anyone else out there have any other
suggestions?

Thanks,
Raul
