Possibly because you downloaded and removed all that mail
from the server.
By default, many POP mail clients will remove messages from
the server once those messages are downloaded. To change that
default, go to Tools, Accounts, select your mail account, Properties,
Advanced, and enable "Leave a copy of messages on server."
