Accessing local shares

I am trying to access a local share via UNC from the same machine eg:
\\THISMACHINENAME\sharename\restofpath (which works on all other machines
including XP), but XP keeps saying the resource 'is not available' and that
I 'might not have the necessary permissions'.

Can anybody give any suggestions what might be going on? I have been at this
problem now for a week!

O.k going to ask a dumb question

Have you browsed via Explorer to this Shared Folder and ensured you do
actually have permissions to it? (from the Sharing Tab - click permissions)
