Accessing a network drive

I have a router which connects 2 laptops and a desktop. I want to connect a
network drive to the router to enable all 3 machines to access files on the
network drive. Can I install an application on the network drive which all 3
machines can access, eg a contact management application I'm assuming that I
would have to install the application through say the desktop but install
the application's files on the network drive. Is this possible or do I need
to install a server rather than a network drive?
I know nothing about networks apart from having got this one at home
working, so I would be grateful for basic outlines.
Thank you
Tony

Usually programs are installed on each computer with the data stored on a
network share. With most programs it is not possible for several computers
to share one installed program, rather the data is shared between multiple
installs. Sometimes you have to buy a network version of the program to make
this work. What program will you be using?

Thanks Kerry. The first one would be Act6 but I wanted to understand the
principles behind sharing programs.

Act 2006 will work with small networks up to 10 users. Beyond that you need
the premium version. You need to buy a license for each computer and install
it on each computer. The data will reside on a shared folder on one computer
allowing all computers to share the data. I have setup older versions of ACT
but not the current version. The older versions were very complicated to
setup for network use. Hopefully the current version is easier. They do have
an online forum here:
