I have a client who is cautious about using Access as a tool on a corporate
network. Their IT dept insists that it crashes alot. Is there an issue with
opening the database with multiple users at one time?

Yes, Access can crash a lot on a network. But only if the network is
already having troubles. Quite often this can be traced back to a
loose connection or an intermittently faulty network card.

I worked in a multi-national.... i developed a db used by 50+ users
simultaneously both locally and remotely throughout Canada and the US via
Citrix. Access can be deployed over a network without issue. There are of
course steps that you as a developer will need to address (Splitting your db,
booting off people that don't use your db for extended periods of time, etc).
That said, it is very fesible.

As Tony mentioned, the real issue is with the integrity and stability of the
IT network. Is there network already saturated? I was having enormous
problem initially with my db once deployed. I thought the issue was with my
db, but after changes in the network (switched to Gigabit and new
routers...), all of a sudden everything worked fine. It really is not an
Access limitation but the IT one! Having been an Admin, be very careful how
you bring this subject up or you will get resistance from the IT dept (not
what you want).

Thanks Ken. What version of Access are you using? Is there a minimum
version I should stick with?

Tony,

Thanks for the insight. Is there a minimum version I should make sure the
client uses?

Daniel,

This was very helpful and gave some great insight on the magnitude of user
community. Any minimum version you would recommend I have the client use?
