access shared files on another computer

I am trying to access the Shared Files folder on another computer in my lan.
I can see the computer under View Workgroup Computers, and the folder shows
up in My Network Places, but when I try to open it, I get a message that the
folder is not accessible, you might not have permission...........

I've verified that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and the Computer Browser
is started on the computer I'm trying to access. I also tried temporarily
deactivating the firewall and nothing works.

I can access every other computer's Shared Files folder that is in the same
workgroup in this lan, except this one. Anyone have an idea?

NetBIOS, TCP/IP and firewalls all deal with the transport
layer. Your problem is not related to transport - it is related
to access permissions. Assuming that your logon account is
"Bob", make sure that the other machine also has an account
called "Bob", with matching passwords, and that "Bob" on the
other machine is authorised to access the shared folder(s).

I'm sure you're more knowledgable about Windows than I am, but that's not the
problem. Like I said, I can see and access the Shared Files folder on every
other computer in the network and I do not have an id on any of them. Every
computer in the network has only 1 user account.

If this is the case, then you either have XP Home on the other computers or
XP Pro with Simple Sharing enabled (guest). If the inaccessible computer
has XP Pro, make sure that Simple Sharing is enabled (Folder Options>View).
Also check for overlooked firewalls such as those that come with certain
antivirus programs like Norton and McAfee.

Thanks, it is xp pro, and I'll check the settings for simple file sharing.
It may have been turned off.

I confirmed that Simple Fiile Sharing was turned off; I set it back on and it
still doesn't work.

I got around this temporarily, by copying the file to a Shared Folder on
another computer in the Network, and the three Users who wanted to share this
file, now can.
