Access Denied

I have a brand new laptop with XP. This laptop has to drives C: and D:.
recently when files are moved or copied to the D: they give the error "file
access is denied...you don't have permission or the drive is full...". the
drive has like 70 gb available, so I know that's not it. the weird thing is
not all files have this problem. it's random, as far as I can tell. two files
from yesterday arre ok, one from this morning is unaccessable. these files
are generated by word or excel (the only programs in use at the moment). the
other funny thing is if you try to use DOS to move or list the files, the
system wont recognise all the folders the files are in. additionally windows
explorer wont rename thses folders either. even tried in safe mode.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just check too that you are not filing to the partition drive!
