Cronos

hi I recently messed up my system, and was unable to access windows.

so i did a new install so that i was at least able to access my old files,
and transfer them over.

except there was one folder "my pictures" which i had set special permisions
on it. I had set it so that only I could access it, not even the general
system admin could access this folder.

the only problem now is that i can't access it either.

I have been trying to figure out a way to change the permissions on it so
that i can get it back.

It has several gigs worth of family and friends pictures which aren't backed
up... i really don't wanna lose these..

anyone have any ideas?

have a similar problem. using xp home sp1, dell desktop about 5 months old.
3 users all with admin privileges.
if i go into my user, i will call it #1, then explore all users, off start
button, i can access all of user #2's folders. i can't access user #3's
desktop, favorites & cookies. i receive advisory box "access denied". the
other folders in user #3 can be accessed. if i'm in user #2, same thing,
cannot access user #3's desktop, favorites & cookies folder. this seemed to
have happened after user #3 set a password. it has since been removed.
prior, i was able to access all users' folders from any user.

i followed the link: http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htm

could you possibly explain how to do the following qoute from link:

"6 Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you
want for the folder and its contents."

how do you reapply permissions & security settings?

i'm not sure if this is a similar problem to chronos' or if this will solve
my problem. i had posted in xp general, but i've had some problems receiving
replies to posts, or they were only partially answered.

any help greatly appreciated, thank you, len kiesling

(To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
1 Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click
Properties.
2 Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one
appears).
3 Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4 In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are
logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want
to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner
on subcontainers and objects check box.
5 Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do
you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you
Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership
of.

6 Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you
want for the folder and its contents.)

thanks for reply! i have viewed the 308418 kb article. i just don't seem to
follow it. i did take ownership, but don't remember if i checked the box as
directed in step #4 of wintudor article, where it states: "If you want to
take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on
subcontainers and objects check box". could that be why i still couldn't
access those folders? & if i do these changes, will all folders be
accessable from all 3 users?
thank you ramesh, len kiesling

Leonard,

Are you able to access the folder from Administrator login? If not, re-do
"Take ownership" and then apply the permissions accordingly for each user,
if you want to share that folder.

OTOH, if you only want to recover data from the old profile, take ownership
and then transfer the files to the preferred location. Later delete the old
profile (optional).
