access denied "permissions"

hi I recently messed up my system, and was unable to access windows.

so i did a new install so that i was at least able to access my old files,
and transfer them over.

except there was one folder "my pictures" which i had set special permisions
on it. I had set it so that only I could access it, not even the general
system admin could access this folder.

the only problem now is that i can't access it either.

I have been trying to figure out a way to change the permissions on it so
that i can get it back.

It has several gigs worth of family and friends pictures which aren't backed
up... i really don't wanna lose these..

anyone have any ideas?

A lot of how you recover these depends on how you limited access to the
files. A good place to start if these files are not encrypted is trying to
take ownership (ownership rights supercede adminitrator rights):

Open Computer Management in Administrative Tools. Under Local Users and
Groups> Users, you should see the default Administrator account . Right
click on it and use "Set Password."

Alternatively, you could use Start> Run> control userpasswords2
and change the password for the account there. NOTE: Using this tool to
manage accounts in XP Home is not recommended by MS.

thanks, that did the trick!!

I just have one more problem...

The system kept logging into the administrator user account instead of mine
so i decided to put a password on it so that it would only log in if i
wanted to

now i keep getting this message saying to check the password & domain and it
won't let me do anything with that account.

at which point it goes to the logon screen.

once i logged into my user account, i thought i might be able to remove the
password i had set for the admin account

but i don't even see that account in the user accounts window... all i see
is Mine, guest and the asp-net accounts
