Access Denied Installing SP4

P

Peter Birkle

I have been succeffuly install SP 4 on al my Windows 2000
Servers with relatively no issues but I have one win2k
Server that simply won't install SP4 no matter what I try.

I have full Domain admins and local administrator access
to this server. About near the end of the SP4 install I
get the message access is denied and then have 2 options
rollback or accept what has been partly installed but your
system may not operate correctly.

IF fails so wuick so I can't see where excactly the access
denied is comming from. What I do know is that after
having done this 6 times it looks like a file in the
$NtServicePackUninstall$ directory on the server is denied.
Bit I ihave full admin rights

Error in Event log = EVENT ID 4373 Access Denied to a
rather long SID Number which is that of my account who has
Domain Admin privs.

Any help much appreciated.

It may be that at some point someone has removed permissions from a file or
folder that needs to be changed to prevent the administrator accessing them.

That could cause the situation you describe , although tracking down the
problem further could be hard.

We had a similar problem because of settings mandated by security
folks. We have to make sure the key
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\Security
permissions are set to give admin "full". Otherwise service pack
installations will fail with Access Denied.

May not be your problem, but who knows <G>
