"Access Denied" Driving me nuts

Joe

Hello,

I can not do two things:

1. Install SP1 for XP-Pro
2. Install a print driver - HP All-in-One

With problem 1, I get an access is denied dialog box after
the down load has completed. It will go all the way
through the install and the very last step, it fails
with "Access Denied" and deletes the install to where I
began. I have logged on as an administrator and my local
ID and I have the appropriate security that is needed to
do an install of this type. I also have a fully licensed
copy of XP-Pro (no boot leg here). Another tid bit of
info here, I have logged on as an Admin in safe mode and
tried to install it from the desktop. Still no
luck, "Access Denied".

With Problem 2, I also get an access denied dialog box. It
tells me that the install can not continue
because, "Access Denied". No other info is available.
However, when I tried to install the print driver as an
Administrator, the print driver software did a system scan
and it came back with a dialog box that says, The
necessary Privileges do not meet the install minimum
requirements". However, if I log on as me (local Admin), I
do not get that dialog scan results box. But after all of
the steps of the install completes, I get a small dialog
box that says, "Access Denied" and it reverts back the
changes made to the system...

I am very perplexed and frustrated here... Is there anyone
out there that can help me?

I have searched to the best of my abilities and I am still falling short of an answer. That is why I am posting here. I saw that it was a last resort for information...

Thanks,

Joe

Is this an HP or Compaq machine? If yes, see their site for an update that
must be installed before SP1 is applied.

It is possible that the administrators group was removed from some of the
user rights assignments for your machine.
You can use MYTOKEN.EXE(Platform SDK) to see what user rights are assigned
to your administrator account. You can then compare this information w/ a
working admin account on another machine.

The output will look like the following. This is the section you would
compare to a working admin account.
Privileges associated with this token (18)
SeChangeNotifyPrivilege - (attributes) 3
SeSecurityPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeBackupPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeRestorePrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeSystemtimePrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeShutdownPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeRemoteShutdownPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeTakeOwnershipPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeDebugPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeSystemEnvironmentPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeSystemProfilePrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeProfileSingleProcessPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeLoadDriverPrivilege - (attributes) 2
SeCreatePagefilePrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege - (attributes) 0
SeUndockPrivilege - (attributes) 2
SeManageVolumePrivilege - (attributes) 0

It maybe something like the admin account does not have the right to
load/unload device drivers.
The following article shows what each of the above user rights map to...

Again, try disabling firewall.
then doing the update.
if it works you need to reset the 'run dll as an app' in
the system properties of your firewall and then you can
reenable it.

Doesnt seem like the problem but it might be.
