My xp home backup utility is not installed by default, I
know that I've have to retrieve the file from the CD-ROM,
but have no idea how to go about it. When I inserted the
CD, it prompts me to choose from these items: 1)install
window xp 2)install optional window components 3)perform
additional tasks 4)check system compatibility. I choose
window components, but couldn't find the backup
utility.....pls advise.

If you have a rescue disk the valueadded folder may be on
it or your XP Disk, Mine was on disk #2

Insert the XP or Rescue CD, and run NTBACKUP.MSI
program
from the folder D:\valueadd\msft\ntbackup

You can get a copy here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

In XP Home the ASR Floppy Disk does not work . It will
NOT backup to a CD. You can back up to a folder on your
hard drive then burn it to a CD. The native program in
XP will not span CD's though.

Here is how to use it;

You can trick it with a packet writing program like Roxio
Direct CD & Drag and Drop (comes with Easy CD Creator )
Or Nero InCD or Sonic DLA You then use a CD ( will not
Span cd's) or DVD's (4.7+ gb) to back up to though.

Hi Murphy,

To manually install Backup for a Home "retail" version:

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows
XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup: CD-ROM Drive
:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

Hi:
Click on Perform additional tasks, then click on Browse this CD, double
click the ValueAdd folder, then the MSFT folder, then the NTBACKUP folder
and finally double click the NTBACKUP.MSI which will start the installer.
good luck.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for your immediate response, I have read the
microsoft/support which you have posted and also knew
that I could use :\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP, but I'm a
newbie in this area, could you guide me step by step as
to how am I going to locate this valueadd\msft\ntbackup?
Does it need me to go into a command prompt?

Hi Murphy,

Place the CD in. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to your CD Rom, open the
plus sign then choose: WINXP/Home. In the right pane, double click
VALUEADD, then double click MSFT, then double click NTBACKUP, then double
click NTBACKUP.
MSI. Follow the wizard.

I know that I can always count on microsoft newsgroup, :)
You on the right track, Human. Many thanks! Have managed
to get into the folder. But something prevented me from
proceeding with the installation. Cos when I read
the "read me" It says "1) ASR is not supported on home
edition. If you istall ntbackup from the CD to the home
edition, ASR functionally will appear to work fine during
the backup session. Since setup does not support ASR in
the home edition, there is not way to initiate the ASR
restore in case of a disater. If you need to restore from
this session, install windows xp manually and then
restore from the ASR media. 2)Backup to CDRW> If you
decied to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device
directly. You must create a backup set of 650mb or less
and backup to a file. After the file is complete, copy
the file to the CDRW.

Seems to me there's so many obstruction, so my question
is should I go ahead with the installation with the
backup utility or is there a better way to backup? Once
again, appreciate for your help, human........
