Access 2003 Link Causes External Table is not in the Expected Format.

Steven Kraninger

I have some DBASE tables (not FOXPRO) that I have been able to link to an
access database using Access 2000 in and Access 2000 format database.
The linked tables work as they should with Access 2000.

However, when I try to use the same database in Access 2003, I get the
message
"External Table is not in the Expected Format". This message also occurs
when
attempting to link to DBASE tables using Access 2003.

My XP PRO system has SP2 with all patches.
I have tried to re-install and "repair" install Access 2003.
I have applied Jet SP8 and verified that the registry is correct.
I do not want to use ODBC.

Are there any Answers out there.

Thanks in advance

Hi, Steven.
However, when I try to use the same database in Access 2003, I get the
message
"External Table is not in the Expected Format".

Are you opening the database in Access 2003 on a different computer than the
one with Access 2K? If so, then ensure that the latest version of MDAC
(MDAC 2.8 SP-1) is also installed on the Access 2003 computer, because
connecting to external tables that do not have the Jet architecture requires
appropriate drivers.

You may also want to drop the link to the DBASE table, then recreate the
link in Access 2003 to see if that fixes the problem.

Ensure that all computers connecting to or opening the Access database have
the same service pack versions for both Jet and MDAC, i.e., Jet 4.0 SP-8 and
MDAC 2.8 SP-1. This will help avoid database corruption and occasional odd
behaviors.
