absolutely frustrating vista sharing

favian

first, how can i can access another network resource with different
credentials/password from the address bar?

for websites/ftp sites it would be something like

username:p[email protected]

is there something similar in vista?

everytime i try to access a vista shared folder from vista, it asks
for a username & pw in a windows prompt box,
even though i typed the right username/pw it still locked me out

when i made several unsuccessful attempts, it looks like vista has
completely locked out that pc from trying to access it.

what can i do to unlock out the xp computer from accessing the vista
pc???

vista has the worst file sharing.

Hello favian...sorry your having trouble.

If I read you correctly every time you try to access a network share
you are prompted for a user name and password request. If that is the
case it sounds like you have password protected sharing enabled.

Open the control panel and open the network and sharing application.
Now make sure that the password protected sharing option is "not"
enabled.

Hope it helped.

Joel, thanks for the prompt response. I have already tried this. I
used to get prompted for password, however because of so many failed
password attempts, that is when i started getting the error messages.
I have completely disabled the need for passwords as well as per your
suggestion. If i had to guess i would say it has to do with the too
many bad password attempts which has locked me out from accessing the
vista completely ( a security measure I'd assume). Assuming vista is
now blocking access from the xp pc, is there any way to unblock it?

Here is the way to do it!

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in
Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to
enable File and Printer Sharing.
Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small
Office Network.
