Absolutely Annoying Pop-up

G

Guest

Each and every time I respond to a post in this (or any other M$ forum) I get
a pop-up requesting my email address and two IDENTICAL checkboxes asking me
if I care to have M$ flood my email box with spam.

Does anyone out there know why these have started appearing? Is there any
way to kill them? I have gone to my Profile and answered the question many
many times, but it still appears after every post.

Hi

Try searching for any spyware you may have on your system with the following
programs:

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com
Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Also see the following links:

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also run a virus-check on your system with the latest definitions for your
anti virus program.

I have, and use, every one of those programs. Perhaps it would be good to
mention that it is coming DIRECTLY from a MICROSOFT WEB SITE. It has
something to do with signing up for a Windows Live Profile. I already HAVE
one of those, and I have already filled out the checkboxes in my profile that
already answer the question asked of me in Microsoft's pop-up.

There it was again. The pop-up is identified as the following:

https://profile.microsoft.com Communities E-Mail Notification and contains
two IDENTICAL checkboxes asking me if it is OK for Microsoft so send me stuff
to my email address - which is already filled in with my address shown in my
profile. Note that this appears to be a SECURE site as shown by both the S
in https and a closed lock down in the notification area.

It is definitely coming from Microsoft and I want to KILL it.

I don't have a specific answer to your question, but let me point out you
are using the web interface to read this newsgroup, and it's the slowest,
clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch
to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

If you do that, besides the problem disappearing, you will find that using
newsgroups (these are *not* forums, despite their appearance because of the
way you are accessing them) will be a much more pleasant experience.

Thanks, Ken, but I don't use Outlook or Express for my emails, I use
Thunderbird. The last thing I need sharing time with my CPU is another
executable.

I was just wondering if there was a solution for making this pop-up go away.

Hello,
When I receive that pop-up my Hotmail address is in the e-mail address text
box and one item is marked,"Microsoft sending information".
I do not change anything on this page and click on "continue", I think it is
"continue."
The pop-up goes and the "DONE" page shows.
I use IE7 and Firefox, this occurs in both browsers.
I suppose Microsoft wants a larger base for advertising and the new system
is buggy.
Perhaps if enough send complaints, by using the "contact us" link.

take care.

That's right Beamish. Notice that you can fill in ANY email address - I like
to use one I got for M$. ;<)

The problem with the "contact us" is that you can't. Every time I
tortuously navigate to this page (and fill the whole thing out) I am told,
when I click Send, that "this function is busy right now and to please check
again later". I guess they don't really want to hear from us. However else
can you complain? No way, I'm thinking.

But what you use for E-mail has nothing to do with what you use to read
newsgroups. I use a different program for each. And there are many other
good newsreaders besides Outlook Express. I suggested that one only because
it's an easy way to get started. I like OE, but many people prefer other
newsreaders. The only people I know who prefer the web interface are those
who have never really tried a newsreader.

The last thing I need sharing time with my CPU is
another executable.

It really doesn't matter. How many programs you have open is not an issue
that affects performance. What affects performance is what programs are
actively in use at the time. If a program is open, but idle, it will very
quickly get paged out, and stay there in the page file until you use it.
While it sits in the page file, it has no effect on your performance.

So there's really no "sharing time with [your] CPU" involved

If I were in your shoes, I would at least give it a try. You might be amazed
at how much better an experience it is.

Thunderbird works fine for reading this newsgroup. And you could use
Firefox if you wanted to continue with the web interface and have it
block the pop-ups.

That's the problem in a nutshell -- Firefox won't block it (or can't block it).

Two things to look at, first is the site in the exceptions for the
pop-up blocker in Firefox? Second do you have the messaging service
turned on? I had a lot of pop-ups showing up that were coming through
the service until I killed it.

No and No. I finally got through to M$ and they hmmm'd and hawww'd a
bit and then kicked it upstairs to the web people. They admit it
shouldn't be happening. I even sent them a screen shot of their own
pop-up that was opening. They admit it is theirs, but don't know why
I'm getting it.

It's in their hands now.

Until they fix it use the newsreader in Thunderbird to avoid the
problem. I notice that the pop-up does not appear if you just read the
posts using Firefox.

Using the Newsreader now. I agree it is a better system, but takes some
getting used to because of the way Thunderbird sorts the emails.

My thanks to everyone who listened in on this.

You can change the sort order by View > Sort By ..

Choose "Date Received","Descending" if you want it like Web-Based.

Good Luck, Ayush.
