I presently have XP Pro installed .

However I'm about to significantly change the hardware on this PC by
installing a different motherboard and graphics card and upgrading the
memory from 512Mb to 1 Gb of memory.

What will I have to do to re-Authenticate XP Pro after these changes ,
please ?

What is usually required is for you to boot from the XP CD and do a repair
install, otherwise XP will not boot normally because of the new hardware.

Once that is completed authentication may be done as it was the first time,
over the web, or you may have to calll an 800 number.

You will have at least to do a repair reinstall of the system to match
it to the new hardware; you might well decide to back up data and do a
complete format and reinstall.

After a format you will need to activate again. It is likely that this
will look like a significantly changed machine, and unless it is over
120 days since you last did that (in which case a new format will
activate again on the net) you will have to do so by phoning in to a
toll free number that will be given, to explain briefly and exchange one
long number for another. You would also have to do that immediately if
you do the repair; tough you *might* find that you were within the
limits if you have a Network card that has always been present. More on
this at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

Thanks to both who've replied .

I have a a Drive Image file of my system taken before I do this major
hardware change - would that be a way to re-instal XP without the
need to use the XP CD and select REPAIR as suggested by the first
replier ?

I realise I will probably need to contact MS also eventually to
re-activate XP but , perhaps D.I. would be a neater route back to full
use of XP ?

You'll still probably need to do a repair install.

Hi,

You are changing so much of the machines hardware that you are
better off doing a complete reload from scratch.

A drive image will not help you because XP will have been
configured for all your old hardware and when it tries to start up
with all your new bits in it will no doubt have a fit and you'll end up
doing a full reload anyhow.

Bye,
Pete

Good point - didn't think of that - thanks for the advice.
