About firewal Appls.?

Mark G.

I have used sygate pro, zone alarm, and one or 2 others in the past, but it
has always seemed that at some point, that they have cause problems for me.
Most commonly recalled is them not allowing me to play online games. I
remember that specific to Zone Alarm. So I am here to ask you, can someone
possible recommend a good software firewall? Maybe something free?

No keep in mind, I do have a router which acts as a hardware firewall. And I
have been told by some reputable folks that the hardware firewall is all I
would need especially if I have other protective software running such as
anti-virus, spyware detectors, trojan detectors, etc...

All info is much appreciated. Thanks.

Mark,

There is nothing better than ZoneAlarm or sygate. :)
They just need to be properly configured.
Router is not a firewall, it's a router.
When I didn’t have a hardware firewall I user ZoneAlarm. Now I am using Windows firewall (ICF) and FR114P (http://tinyurl.com/3e26m).

Hope this helps.

Many routers also act as a firewall by doing NAT.

Greetings --

A properly configured software firewall should cause no problems,
even with on-line games.

Like WinXP's built-in firewall, NAT-capable routers and hardware
firewalls do little or nothing to protect the uninformed user from
him/herself. Again -- and I _cannot_ emphasize this enough -- almost
all spyware and many Trojans and worms are downloaded and installed
deliberately (albeit unknowingly) by the user. So a software
firewall, such as Sygate or ZoneAlarm, that can detect and warn the
user of unauthorized out-going traffic is an important element of
protecting one's privacy and security. Most antivirus applications do
not scan for or protect you from adware/spyware, because, after all,
you've installed them yourself, so you must want them there, right?
