Abit ic7-g and Saphire Radeon X1600 AGP 515 - anyone got his combo working?

I cannot get ANY drivers except 'Generic VGA drivers' to load in XP
Pro SP2.

What I've tried:
1) Remove old 9700 Pro, go to safe mode run driver cleaner removing
all ATI items
Reboot with supplied CD in drive, got found new hardware wizard
(running in 4 bit ultra low res at this point). Ejected and reinserted
CD so install autoran - gave 'Setup failed to run initiialisation'
error 0x80040707. Checked the web and found and followed %userprofile%
issue 'cure'. No help same error. Tried latest Omegas - seemed to
install OK, rebooted - BSOD STOP error. Went through cleaning manually
as on ATI site as well as using driver cleaner. Did this through at
least 10 cycles with different ATI official and Omega drivers and got
one or other of the above errors every time.
2) Did a clean install of XP and still managed to get the
%Alluserprofile% error once but otherwise the drivers (any of the many
versions I've tried) seem to install, show as installed in device
manager but Dxdiag still shows 'generic VGA driver' and I have no
graphics acceleration.
3) At this point I was beginning to think it was a duff card so tried
installed Vista RC2 and the ATI beta drivers. This went smoothly and
I've been playing Oblivion in Vista for hours with no issues.
I still cannot install the drivers in XP though even after another
clean install. I've (re) installed both the latest chipset driver from
Intel and the latest ones on the Abit site - still no joy.
Suggestion please!

There's no need for that. Both the ATi Control Panel and Display Driver (in
that order) can be uninstalled cleanly through Control Panel -> Add/Remove,
without going into Safe Mode. Obviously, do all driver installation/removals
under Administrator rights.

Driver Cleaner, being a 3rd-party app, requires a great deal of diligence on
the part of the author to keep track of all the different driver versions. I
don't trust it.
Reboot with supplied CD in drive

That's likely the source of your problem. Use the latest drivers from
AMD/ATi web site.

You may need to update the Intel chipset drivers, too.

Try clearing the BIOS, unplug the power cord from the power supply & remove
the BIOS battery jumper for 30 seconds.
Put jumper back in place, plug power cord back in, boot into BIOS, reset
everything, leave Plug and Play as "NO"

This might help.
