Radeon 9600 Pro and Abit KR7A-RAID problems

Chris

Is anyone out there successfully using a Radeon 9600 Pro with an Abit
KR7A-RAID (or KR7A for that matter) motherboard? Or any other Via
KT266A based chipset?

I have updated the BIOS on the motherboard to the latest CX version,
installed the VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.49 drivers from Abit's website and
uninstalled my old, faulty nVidia GF3 Ti200 card and drivers as per
the intructions (Windows is now using a generic driver). However the
machine won't start when I insert the Radeon 9600 Pro card (actual
model is a Tyan Tachyon G9600 Pro) - I just get a blank screen and the
speaker on the card starts wailing.

If anyone has any advice it would be most appreciated since I haven't
had any response from Tyan, Abit or ATi.

Chris.

ok try this power off the computer un plug it then clear the bios "with the
jumper for 10 seconds or longer" now plug in the 9600 and boot up go in to
bios first thing and set everything back up to how you want it. i take it
you are useing the powerconector on the video card? only time i ever got the
beeping was i forgot the powerconector on my 9700. and i hope you got a 300
wat or better powersuply if not thats probly a big part of the problem.

I get continual beeping (nee nah, nee nah... like a police siren) from
the 9600. Do you know what that could mean? The troubleshooting guide
and the website don't say anything about this.
Video cards don't make noise, the sound will be coming from your
motherboard and the beep codes will be listed in the Abit manual.

Thanks for the reply Mangyrat,

I've tried your sugesstions, unplugged and cleared the BIOS via the CMOS
jumper and tried rebooting but it made no difference - still no joy. I
havve a 350W Enermax PSU which should be man enough for the job but I do
have a lot of stuff attatched....

My next steps are to start disconnecting them to see if it makes a
difference.

Cheers,

That sound is usually the motherboard's overheating alarm.

Sounds like the 9600 Pro is defective.
Have you tried the card in a different system ?

Thanks for your replies guys, I'm getting somewhere now.

I have neglected to mention a fainter long beep followed by two short
beeps that come before the louder constant wailing. If I'd have stopped
swearing at the damn thing I'd have heard it sooner. ;-)

Anyway, I've also posted on alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit and a guy
called Enkidu suggests this reports a display card or monitor connection
error. Now as far as I can tell the card is seated correctly (I can't
push it into the AGP slot any more). There is no external power cable
required on the 9600 Pro so it must draw all its power from the AGP slot
and there aren't that many BIOS settings for AGP that I can actually
change so I'm still stumped.

I'll try pulling everything out and reseating everything although the
card doesn't butt up against any other components.

I've got quite a lot of crap in the machine (listed below incase anyone
knows of any conflicts/problems) but disconnecting the least important
devices makes no difference. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I would give another power supply a try, as the older Enermax "350watt"
power supplies often had problems with the rails dropping below spec,
particularly the 5 volt rail.

Did you by chance get this card from E-buyer? I had a problem with the same
card on a at7max2 Board.
amazingly I did have a KR7a-Raid board but blew the Northbridge some 2/3
days before Tyan Card arrived with me.

Anyways, all I did was send the card back to e-buyer and the replacement
worked fine.
Unfortunately for me I have now had a total of 4 Graphics cards that didn't
work from e-buyer, all be it various types and models of cards, I can only
guess they like to kick them about in the warehouse before they send them
out.

Hi LoRe,

Yep, I got the card from E-buyer - you can't fault their price.

When it arrived it was shrink wrapped but the anti-static packet that
the card was in was open. Did yours arrive in the same condition??
Anyway I'll give it a few more tries then it's going back.

Chris.
