Ability to change System Volume and view on taskbar

As of a couple of months ago, my "Dell Dimension 3100" PC running Windows XP
with M-Audio 410 Soundcard suddenly ceased to be able to change the system
voulme of the computer, which is exteremly annoying as the sound can vary
greatly in volume.

When opening the "Sound and Audio Devices" tab, the whole Device Volume box
is greyed out with both the "Mute" and "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
unchecked. There is no volume icon on the taskbar whatsoever. Dell Online
Support tries to fix the problem but nothing changes.

Please can you help?

Is this one of those 410 firewire devices? If so, get the latest driver
from M-Audio.
