A WARNING to ALL !!!

Microsoft Corp has 'integrated' their DRM Policy into the latest
Windows 2000 Updates - without you knowing IT.

My own (pre DRM) Video Card [an ATI Rage 128 Pro 'All-In Wonder' video
card] has been "compromised" by Microsoft's latest drivers [in an
attempt] to make all things - Microsoft DRM Controlled.

This video card (and Apps) has had NO PROBLEMS [in the past] -
playing back MPEG-2 video files - until I installed the 'Latest
Microsoft Windows 2000 Fixes'.

- Now all my MPEG-2 files have to be "Played Back" thru my current
'version' of Microsoft's Windows 'Media Player'. - or the just won't
display properly !!!

This is 'Corperate Hi-Jacking' of my computer -at its WORST.

No where in my Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional 'User' Agreement
Policy does it say that I will ALLOW Microsoft to 'Control' my
computer's AGENDA - for the SAKE of their Partnership Agreements -
with Third Party Advocates !!!

Mr. Gates - stop 'changing' the Rules - to suit your New Found "Bed
Fellows" !!!

And 'Honour' your Original Policies !!!

And what was the reason for doing the update in the first place...
without even reading what is being updated to the computer? The
normal rule is to never install driver files for peripherals unless
they actually came from the manufacturers' sites. Unfortunately, the
end user "voluntarily" allows Microsoft to amend the user's license
on the computer.

And the news about Microsoft, Sony and DRM is old hat. And one
should expect a signatory of major anti-piracy drives to be one of
the participants in the enforcement of such. One should have kept to
Version 7 or earlier of Windows Media Player.

The solution to all this is simply to uninstall the current version of
Windows Media Player and revert to the original Windows 2000 version,
Media Player 6.4. And as for the video card, to the current ATI drivers,
from ATI.

I am still using Windows Media Player 6.4 (with MS security updates),
and I did not update the video card drivers to anything but ATI
'Authenticated' drivers .

It expect it was POSTED as a Windows 2000 "Security Fix"..

The only other program that I have installed that could have affect
the Codecs - was iTunes.
[ But, this was version 6.x (without the 'revised' QuickTime
"Proprietary" Add-In ) !!! ]

This may will be the source of the problem. Recall the fact that for
iTunes to function, it must operate under DRM standards. This is to
protect the publishers and copyright owners. Check out the relationship
between iTunes and DRM in Wikipedia, here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Rights_Management

Seriously doubt that Windows 2000 can be blamed here. As a matter of
fact, Microsoft would prefer that many of its Windows 2000 users go
away or at least upgrade to Windows Vista. There hasn't been much in
Windows Updates for Windows 2000 over the past year and a half. And
there was no real support for DST except from non-MS parties.

Actually 'GHalleck', there has been numerous Windows 2000 and IE 6.0
Updates and Fixes [available from the Microsoft Website] - and many
Office 2000 Fixes - as well.

All of them FREE of charge. - and most of them worth upgrading to.

My problem seems to 'reside' with just one (or two) of them.

And that is why I give this WARNING !!!

MS has one and only one goal - to fill their coffers higher. Users are
of no interest except in serving that purpose.

By forcing DRM onto users, they hope to gain favor as "the" platform
for A/V as acknowledged by content providers. This helps them in their
plan to extend their realm from the desktop, to the set top, to the
palm top, to home automation, to business automation, etc.

Vote appropriately for an administration that will restrict unbridled
monopoly and enforce the anti-trust laws on the books.

There is a good adage that advocates that one need not fix something
that is not yet broken. Of the numerous updates and fixes that get
shown in Windows Update or Microsoft Update, many are redundant. A
few are beta files that are being distributed as solutions for some
odd or unusual situation that has evolved. And some are just plain
nuisance, such as Microsoft's evolution of Media Player and/or plugins
to Media Player to suit whatever situation at hand. The burden is on
the user to determine when and what to update. And the act of updating
grants Microsoft the right to change one's computer in whatever way the
update takes it. And, BTW, I agree with GHalleck that the number of good
and valuable updates to Windows 2000 has been far and few in-between,
since the last rollup to SP4.

I have to Totally agree with you HERE (on this One).

At what POINT do we have to 'Accept' Mircosoft's Updates - being the
BEST SOLUTION for us Windows 2000 'Users' ???

Bill Gates has obviously "Sold Out" [prostituted himself] - to the New
DRM Security Society (without question).

And should these 'Agreements' be Backward Compatible to previous
Windows OS's.Owners ???

LINUX is starting to "Look Better" - every day.

PS: I foresee a MIGRATION to LINUX (and Googles Office) that Microsoft
has never "FORESEEN" !!!
