I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users.
It has removed 2 spam emails to date.
Paying users do not have this message in their emails.
Try www.SPAMfighter.com for free now!

Other OE users have reported bizarre problems using SPAMfighter. Uninstall
it, reboot and see if your problems persist.

Not all of the messages in this thread are available to me so apologies if
this has been posted previously and doing so hasn't helped you:

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

OE Caveats:

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

OK spamfighter is history. Didn't like it anyway, just too lazy to dump it.

All my antivirus programs are disabled at the present time and I ( through
another suggestion) messed with my sent and inbox.

I just changed my identity to George.

We'll see because here it comes. Glenn (George)

Hey, no freeze!!!

Did several things, I have my antiv reactivated now and I will send this
through to confirm it must have been the identity if everything works.

If I just deleted my identities and re-established they would that be the
same as changing them? That has to be done on every ng? Still that is a
lot better than the alterative I was contemplating. OK here it comes.

Just changed my identity back and all is well. I don't know if messing with
it fixed the problem or if spamfighter was the cause. Seems like I remember
deleting it once before so I'm leaning toward the messing with the identity
was the answer. Thank you. That was a long fight but I think I/we won.
Will see if this goes OK.

Before this reply, I did the change back and another NG that had the same
problem is cleared up now so MAYBE we have it.

1. Don't disable your anti-virus app, just disable scanning of
outgoing/incoming mail. (It doesn't scan newsgroup messages or posts but
may have corrupted your old identity...or SPAMkiller did.) It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<quote>
Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully
protected.
</quote>

2. You should have *replaced* your identity with a new one. Do not rename
it. All newsgroups should be functional in the new Named Identity now.
Assuming you've successfully imported your Local folders from the old
identity, you may now delete it.

YW.

If your old identity is the default one named 'Main Identity', do yourself a
favor and replace it with the new Named Identity, Glenn. 'Main Identity' is
much more prone to corruption than a user-created Named Identity.
