As a matter of interest I regularly use Ad-aware, Spybot and run AVG
anti virus and Zone alarm, all updated of course. I then came across
this piece of software www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ called "a
squared" It proceeded to find 62 infected objects. This does not say
much for the other software that I use. Anyway I recommend "a squared"

The free version requires divulging my email addy, so it's not "free"
and it isn't worth it. If you want something really worthwhile, invest
a small amount of money in a high quality product like Kaspersky ...
or if you're astute enough you can use the abandoned KAVDOS32 which
still works very well even on NT based OS.

You may create a free Fake email account at

www.mailinator.com

I did. I use it for instances like someone wanting my email addy to
download something. I did download a squared, and am a little leary of
it. I created an account using my fake email addy. I went to mailinator
to check. I found along with the accont info 2 spams. Funny as I had
just created this account. I will delete a squared.

62 false alarms probably
Maybe, but easily checked by googling. Personally, I like a squared. It
has found several programs that adaware and spybot missed. On checking
what the programs did, they were all "call home" and installed by
companies like creative and visioneer. Zone alarm caught the visioneer
one trying to call out, which prompted me to run a squared.

In fact, just used it today and it caught the scanner spyware, since I
had re-installed the scanner.

As far as spam goes, most of mine is stopped by my ISP, so no big deal
if I get a couple more. One click and they are all gone.

Absolutely. I wouldn't be without this one, use a throw-away address
if you're worried about spam.

I never saw any spam that I could associate with giving a-squared an
email address. And I think false positives are a problem with alot of
these malware scanners. And easily researched.

I used a sneakemail address- http://www.sneakemail.com/
So I would know for sure if any spam came from the address I used to
register. Never had any.
I have used a-squared for a couple of years without problem. It picks up on
some different programs like Magic Jellybean and VNC. Worth a bit of space
on the hard drive, for sure.

Bob,
I used to use Asquared Free back when I ran Millennium Edition, but
it never found anything (I practice safe-surfing and don't use IE or
OE.) Got tired of updating it and so I didn't install it after upgrading
to XP. However, I have nothing bad to say about it.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

Thanks for the input. I'll go ahead and give it a try then.
