A persistent and annoying sound occurs after any keyboard use.

I am using Windows XP. After making a few adjustments in Control Panel >
“Sounds and Audio Devices Propertiesâ€, there is now a sound occurring
whenever any keyboard action occurs (obviously I did something to cause
this). I have been able to determine the name of the sound as
“Defsound.wavâ€, and that this sound has by default been assigned to “Alps
Pointing Device Driver > Easy Launcher†and “Typing (with Touch pad tap
enable)†-- both are found via Control Panel > “Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties >Soundsâ€. However, I tested these two operations by setting them
to a different sound (“dingâ€), and this did not affect the problem described.
Until I can fix this problem, I have temporarily turned Sounds off via
Control Panel >Mouse Properties >Others => CLEAR “Sound Feedback >Use Soundâ€
Any advice will be appreciated!

In C. P., go to Keyboard tab in Accessibility Options and see if anything
saying "make a sound with keystrokes" or similar is marked in any of its
settings. Unmark and see if problem disappears.

"Defsound.wav" is not a Windows file. Results from a Google search shows it
as belonging to the software for the ALPs touchpad/pointing device. There
might be separate registry keys for events tied to this device. You could
try searching the registry for that file name. By repeating the search
until all incidents are found, you should come up with the name of the
events that its attached to. Change them to None (check other event keys
for the proper way to enter the "none" designation).

Another suggestion: Create an empty sound file, name it defsound.wav and
replace the existing file with this new one.

Personally, I always turn sound effects off for mouse (in Sounds or in
Mouse properties).
