"A network cable is unplugged"

B

Bob D/

Both Ethernet cards worked successfully during a lan
test, however, they still have a red cross on the lan
connections screen, with the error message "A network
cable is unplugged."

Could anyone please try to find the specifics or cause of
this problem? I know i am very close to success now, i
just need to overcome this barrier.

Once again, need more info: computer make, model, version, OS, hardware. Are
you using the proper cable?

In my experience, that msg doesn't mean that only the cable connnected to
your computer is unplugged. How about the other end of it? Is it connected
to something else? Another computer, or a DSL/Cable modem?

If you are trying to hook up from the Ethernet output port on your PC to the
Ethernet port of an external broadband modem, you should be using a
Category 5 cable with RJ45 Modular connectors at each end. Look at the
cable, it should state that it contains 4 twisted pairs of 24 Gage wire
inside and will state also on the outside of the cable that it is Category
5. Then look at the Modular connectors, you should see 8 shiny connectors.
An RJ45 Plug is just a male telephone connector. If you are trying to hook
up Ethernet 10/100 operation [that is a presumption], that is the only plug
that will go into the proper jacks. By the way, if you have 10/100/1000
Ethernet [fairly new] I do not know what is proper.
Exactly what are you trying to do and what kind of cable and connectors do
you have connected where that are not doing what you want? All the external
Cable or DSL Modems I have seen must be either hooked via a USB Cable and
USB ports on the PC and Modem or via Ethernet ports on PC and Modem using
the Cable I have previouly described. Some modems can be connected either
way.
