a network cable is unplugged

I get this message constantly since I hooked up my dsl. " A network cable is
unplugged." When it appears, everything stalls until it goes away. I don't
have a 'network.' and if I did put other computers on a network, I'd use
wireless.

I'm using a Westell versalink router provided to me by Virizon DSL.

Can anyone tell me how to correct this? The network wizard doesn't have any
instructions that seem to bear on this problem. If you have a solution, I'd
be most appreciative. Thanks, wildbill

Yes, your computer does have a network: the connection to your DSL
router.

The "unplugged" problem could be caused by bad drivers. If your DSL
router connects using Ethernet, download and install the latest
drivers for your Ethernet card. If your DSL router connects using
USB, download and install the latest USB drivers from Westell.

Thanks. I went to customer support at Verizon before I got your response and
they had me changing the duplex whatever. I hope this didnt screw something
up.

Now, the Westell router is using a yellow wire that plugs into the back of
the computer into a connection that looks different (thicker?) than the USB
connection in the front of the computer. It's labeled "lan" which I know is
local area network so can I assume that its an ethernet? It is a realtek
RTL8139 family pci fast ethernet nic. So do I still go to Westell or to
Realtek?

Yes, that's Ethernet. Many different manufacturers use Realtek chips
in their Ethernet cards, and Windows XP should have built-in drivers
for them. If you can determine the actual make and model of your
card, you could go to that manufacturer's site. Realtek's site is
http://www.realtek.com.tw

The problem could be a bad router port, so connect your computer to a
different port and see what happens. The problem could also be a bad
network cable between your computer and the router. Wiggle the cable
at both ends and see what happens.

This kind of intermittent problem can be hard to troubleshoot.
