a network cable is unplugged

My computer icon has a red x on it and says Local Area Connection, A network
cable is unplugged. I dont know how to fix it. I only have one computer
here.And I have dial up connection. Hope you can help me. Nonnie

dbl click the icon. click properties. uncheck the 2 boxes at the bottom.

i went to Local Area Connections, unchecked 2 bottom boxes, nothing happen.

Try doing a right click on the icon then click "Disable". This should remove
the icon and disable it.

That icon simply means that your computer has a NIC (Network Interface
Connection) that is not being used.
The most direct route for removing that Icon is go to the Device Manager and
disable the NIC.
To get to the Device Manager, go to the Control Panel and choose the SYSTEMS
icon.
Then go to the HARDWARE tab.
Then go to the DEVICE MANAGER button
Then go the Network Adapters and click on the box with the + sign.
Then right mouse click on your listed Network card and choose DISABLE from
the menu.
Then close all windows.

If you decide later you want to use this computer in a network, or use a
broad band connection, just repeat the steps and ENABLE the Network Adapter.

If someone uses their laptop via firewire to your PC, that may be the reason
for the icon. Don't know the situation there, so can't provide info.

What does it show for your Network card in Device manager?

You have a regular phone dialup connection?
