A little red x instead of the picture???

What causes an "item or picutre" to come up as a little red x in a box instead of the picture itself when I open an attachment or even sometimes when I'm on the internet and click the "larger view" button for the item? Is there a fix for this?
 
a little box on the screen means you need a java script installed. You can download it at sunjava.com
