a little help please

my laptop is connected to a network that has a large workgroups. I would like to set an ID & password for my laptop in preventing other peoples to access to my laptop. As we know, we can access other PC as long it is connected under the same server (through network places). so i would like to set the password. can anyone give me some clue? i have seen some pc has a password as i tried to explore their shared document.
