A fatal error Trouble with Contact list/phone book

when I try to access my contact by clicking on the "to" to
insert an e-mail address, the following Pop-Up messages
shows up:

" Unable to complete the operation. A fatal error has
occurred in Outlook"

I can close the pop up, close the e-mail but the outlook
program just freezes, the only way to close it is from the
task bar. this happens sporadically no constantly

Any ideas

What version of Outlook do you use?
