a driver mystery to solve

I have win xp pro and asus 8440 graphics with nvidia
GeForce4 ti 4400 chip. Well, I had my computer updated
for memory and stuff, told my manufacturer to update
drivers. They updated my nvidia driver to 53.03. I ran
windows update and it kept saying "a new driver is
available'. This drove me nuts, so I went to nvida's site
and a new driver was there (56.72), said it was for
GeForce 4 ti 4400. Now my windows update said the new
driver was 52.16, which I thought was an error because my
new driver installed by manufacturer was 53.03. They
installed this driver over my old asus driver (why there
are two manufacturers for my graphics card with two
different drivers is great for consumer insanity!). So
my thinking was maybe windows update kept reading those
old asus drivers and not the new ones. sounds logical
right? Well...I uninstalled the asus drivers,
uninstalled the 53.03 nvidia drivers and installed the
newest nvidia driver 56.72. shortly after install my
windows task bar started to deteriorate just around the
hide task buttons. It was strang looking. My hidden
task button disappeared completely. SO I uninstalled
reinstalled 4 times. I installed the old nvidia 53.03,
same thing happens. So I uninstalled again (nothing else
to do on a friday nite lol) started in safe mode with
networking (I have broadband), then, windows found
hardware (I clicked cancel when it came up before), and
it automatically installed an older nvidia driver it
found in the win update 52.16. I never had these drivers
on my computer. I do not know where the heck my computer
got the drivers! I do not think it could have download
them after finding new hardware??? This is a mystery.
Now I am afraid to update to nvidia 56.72. My task bar
has not fade yet. Can someone explain to me what the
heck is going on with my task bar? Why do not the 56.72
drivers work? Is there a bios conflict? Help!!!!!

Hi pepper45322,

1) If the driver you have is working, then leave it alone.

2) Drivers on Windows Update are not always the latest version. I generally
recommend that you only get your drivers from the manufacturer of the
hardware. Windows Update is a poor source for this at best.

3) There are not two manufacturers. What you have is an Asus-branded Nvidia
card, this is very common. Stick to the Nvidia site for driver updates.

And 4) as you have discovered, the most recent driver update is not always
the best one for your system.
