need help installing/updating driver..nv4_disp error

Hi, I had a message about this before; but with all the help; it was
overwhelming to try to figure out what the problem is.

But for now; my video just went off and on for a second. So, decided to
update the driver.

The driver is from NVIDIA and that site itself gave me the driver. I have
the driver on my desktop.

I was afraid to delete my current driver; as don't know if do so; and have
an unsuccessful install if then I would have no video.

So.. I ran the driver install program (first i shut down all security and
went offline.)

Once the NVidia program reached the point to install; it said; i had nothing
compatible on my system with that driver. That is not so; it is the driver
for my graphics card. I believe the date of this driver is 2005.

And just to note; saw not to use microsoft updates to update a driver; and
though just to note the driver they show to update with is a 2003.

okay, so the driver won't install, the nvidia; which is the correct one.

Can anyone help me?

(and also if I do delete the driver using now; will that make the video not
work at all?)

so basically; the nvidia site; gave me this driver; and is same name as old;
but newer year, and I get a message when run the program to install; that
there is nothng on my system compatible with this driver installation.

Thanks..and praying video stays on long enough to read your replies.

So far; been running some 8 hours; and today just a bit ago the video went
out for a second; came right back on.

thanks.

drats; sys froze for a second; then video went off (no sound of clicking from
the monitor) just off; and right back on; and repeated same one more time..

I've got a fan running on high into my system (with cover off) unless is a
heating problem as well..been running that whole time.

thanks,
casey

Sounds more like a hardware problem then a driver issue.

Removing the nvidia driver will mean you will, (probably), run at a limited
resolution and colour depth.

XP does have some drivers included already, so it may already have a fully
compatible driver

You need to find out exactly what model your VGA card is eg 9200, and see if
that name is on the compatibility list for the drivers you downloaded.

Since you say your VGA card is old, you might want to look in the archived
section.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us choose legacy from the
pull down menu.

Have you considered your monitor has a problem.

Maybe a power surge has damaged both.
