A domain controller , or is it?

One of the servers here at work is running 2k sp3 and is showing up in
active directory as a domain controller. As it is being used as a webserver
, I am obviously very nervous about the security risk this poses and want to
demote it to a member server.

The trouble is that the server itself does not believe that it is a DC.
If I run DCPROMO then it brings up the options of creating a server for a
new domain or joining an existing one rather than starting the demotion
process.

All the active directory files like NTDS.DIT seem to be there but there is
no file replication or anything else going on in the logs.
Anyone seen anything like this before?

Well promoting it (again) then demoting it has solved the problem.
