A "Bit" OT: IE And Earthlink Problems: Any Help Sure Appreciated.

Hello:

I realize this really doesn't have anything to do with Freeware, but
everyone on this group seems so knowledgeable, I thought I'd try.
If this badly goes against the group's protocals, I apologize, but
would sure appreciate any help. Thanks.

Running W98 on a 5 year old Dell Dimension XPS R400.

Am wondering if anyone else has ever run into this problem:

Ever since I installed the software from Earthlink, my IE has been totally
unuseable.

The Earthlink browser (which is a jazzed up takeoff of IE) is frankly just
too "cutsey" for my tastes.

Tried downloading and installing new IE versions, but they won't install,
or if it does install, continually get error msg's that it has to close, and
won't run.

Have tried re-downloading IE 6 SP1 several times, and also tried reverting
to IE 5; both still give the error msg's.

Boy, whatever the Eartlink browser "took over," and corrupted on my PC, it
sure did well !

Have just about totally given up trying to find out why, and am using
Netscape now, which I really don't like. Would just like to use a regular
version of IE.

The Outlook Express which Earthlink also installed works just fine, and I am
afraid to try and purge the Earthlink browser as I don't want to mess up OE
any.
I believe that they are very closely coupled, and removing
the browser portion would effect the OE portion (or so I've been told many
times).

Anyone else run into this problem?

Would sure appreciate any help with this, or any thoughts on my basic IE
problem.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

I too suffered from a bad installation from EL software. I didn't care for
the "browser" either. I believe if memory serves me correctly, I contacted
their tech support by email and asked HOW to COMPLETELY remove their
software from my system. It all started after version 5.02 (which worked
fine). I have since switched to AT&T, no problems so far. When I was using
EL, I just used Windows dialup and OE for email. It was a bad experience. I
would never use it again.
