_Some_ exe files - Windows cannot find the file

When double clicking the actual file, Windows reports "windows cannot find
file ... <file name.exe>"

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel,
WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.

I've tried the exe fixes on dougknox.com site and kelly's corner XP fix. But
still no luck.

Ideas?

Are they 16 bit? More info needed.

I would say "yes" just because they are a few years old - like TimeSlips and
some Real Estate software. But is there a way to know for sure?
