98 to xp pro

I have 98 installed now and have nothing but trouble. I now have xp pro ( full edition) that I would like to install.How do I format and install the full version?I have tried to install from just the xp disc ,but keep recieving an [process1 initialation failed] error. all help would be appreciated.

Kevin, first do a WinXP compatability check on your hardware and software.
