98->2000 upgrade Kernel mode trap..?

O

onestep

I was upgrading a win98 pc up to 2000, via the win98 interface, since i
have many apps that I don't want to reinstall.
It reboots and then it comes up with a menu,

Windows 2000 Setup
Windows 98

If I choose Win2000 setup, it goes for a minute and then blue screen
with Stop 0x0000007f Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap.

98 runs fine if I choose it, just like before.
I searched for this message on ms support, but couldn't fine anything
regarding setups.
I thought it could be the adaptec scsi controller (for my tape drive),
so I pulled that card out, but still no go.

I took out everything except the basic peripherals, but it still isnt
working.

The drives are FAT16 right now, could that have anything to do with it?
Also, both hard drives, C & D are IDE drives.

Thanks.

What you installed was a dual boot, not an upgrade. Save yourself some time
and trouble, given that you'll more than likely end up with an unstable OS
with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from the upgrade. Best to blow
it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Dave,
Thanks for the prompt and detailed response. I did choose 'upgrade',
that is why I started the upgrade while in Win98 OS, to make sure that
is how it would do it. At first I thought it was dual boot, but then I
saw 'Win2000' Setup(after the first reboot), doesn't it say 'setup'
while it is still upgrading process. I thought it would do that until
it completes, and then reboot, and the Win98 option would be gone?
I could be incorrect on this, but I thought that is how it went when I
was helping the neighbor upgrade a few months ago.

It will be very difficult to reinstall some of the programs again,
because my company has a lock on them, and I will need to call the
helpdesk to get them to regenerate the keys(the software is locked to
our specific PC), and that is more trouble than you know.

Is there any way to get that install process to continue, and get past
the upgrade kernel mode trap?

Thanks a bunch.

I really don't know of any way to "fix" what you've got going. If you search
this group (win2000.setup_upgrade) and win2000.setup for "upgrade" it won't
take you long to see that you don't want anything to do with an upgrade.

I was able to complete the upgrade. I disabled ACPI in the Bios and it
was fine from there.
