9700 Pro failing, then fixes itself

Hi all,

Last month my 9700 Pro card started displaying artifacts in windows, and
even during Post, and games were unplayable. I dug around this discussion
group and others and found many people have had similar problems with this
card and the 9800. A good web site which explains exactly what I am seeing

Now here's the funny thing. As I am debating about RMA'ing this thing, and
what to do in the month or so I am without video card, just as suddenly as
the problem appeared one day, it disappeared! Today the card is running just
fine and has been fine for a week.

So even with all the other threads I've read, no one seems to know what
causes this, other than it is probably related to faulty memory. But the
card fixing itself is something I have never heard of. And I had made no HW
or SW changes around the time the card went bad, nor when it started working
again.

Well, I hope the card will hang on for another 6 months or so. I am not
ready to upgrade quite yet. At least it's under warranty for another 9
months.

Maybe the fan is intermittently failing causing it to overheat on
occasion.

Sorry to snitch your post but could anyone tell me how long does the
warranty of a 9700PRO card lasts?

And the answer to your question is probably card overheating.Check your
case temps. and the card fan.If neither of that is the problem then RMA
it,you still have the warranty.

Looking at http://www.ati.com/support/rma/warranty.html states that the
card is covered for three years from original purchase for the original
purchaser. The manual that came with my 9700 Pro states that the
product had to be registered to receive customer support.

But what if I don't have the original bill and stuff.My card was bought
in a whole computer that was made in the shop so I don't have any boxes
or manuals.Will the warranty work anyway?

According to the website I mentioned if the card is new enough they will
consider it under warranty. I guess since the 9700 came out in the
middle of 2002 it will automatically be considered under warranty for a
couple more months. After that you would need the proof of purchase.
The website details all this much better.

Most likely in the absence of proof-of-purchase the warranty will be from
date of manufacture--if ATI is typical of electronics manufacturers they
have a list of serial numbers with date of manufacture somewhere that they
use for this purpose.

At least in my case I have the receipt from NewEgg. I Bought the 9700 Pro
the day they first had it in stock. So I have some months to go. But the
card is still holding up. It has to fail again before I can RMA it. And in 6
months or so I may be looking to upgrade anyway. But I may think twice about
another ATI card.

I had these symptoms with a 9700Pro and the cause was a faulty connection on
the 12v line on the ATX PSU connector. This was caused by the female side
(the plug end) had belled out through being removed and replaced over time.
I fixed this and the artifacts disappeared completely.
