I have been completely flummoxed by the Catalyst installation CD in a
built-by-ati Radeon 9600SE box. After installing the card and reinstalling
the OS (XP Home), I could find no drivers or control panel on the CD, and
none seemed to be loaded doing the default "install." Only after downloading
from the ati site did the system identify the new card and install the
correct drivers (stubbornly remained vga-compatible before). Then I wanted
the DVD player and although it seems to install (with the MMC), nothing
works. I end up having to kill the task after a lot of aimless DVD
drive-light blinking and no apparent ability to read the DVD at all. What am
I missing? It's mind-boggling that ati could create such a confusing
software install process.
