I'm considering upgrading to XP Home so that my daughter
can use her IPOD. Will XP HOme work adequately with 96
MB. The new sys requirements recommend 128 MB.

Signed,

Too cheap to upgrade system....

Yes it might install with only 96 MB of RAM, but it will
be painfully slow. With the price of RAM so cheap these
days, treat yourself and your computer to at least 256 MB.

By the way, I was not aware that and IPOD would work on a
Windows computer.

XP "can" run on 64MB. i would not run XP on anything less than 256MB. you
are going to have a VERY slow system if you try and run it with 96. Windows
2000 might be a better choice for you.

128 recommended.. 256 not too bad.. 512 pretty good.. do other system
properties make the grade?.. Hard drive size?.. processor?.. are all devices
installed in the system XP compatible?..

When we bought the POD, the sys requirements were Windows
ME, 2000 or XP. Now, Apple has stopped supporting ME.
You can buy a USB adaptor cable, and the IPOD will
interface with your PC - supposedly. Haven't got it to
work yeat

"Crawl" would be a better description than "run". It amazes me that new systems with +2GHz CPUs are currently being shipped with XP and only 128MB of RAM. People are not going to be satisfied and many will jump to the conclusion that it is a lousy computer. Very short-sighted on the manufacture's part.

No, not even close.

The new sys requirements recommend 128 MB.

That's not enough either. How much memory you need for decent
performance depends on what apps you run, but almost nobody with
much less than 256MB is going to be happy. Most people should
have something in the 256-512MB range, again depending on what
apps are run.

No, not really. In fact, XP runs like a dog with only 128MB. I wouldn't
run XP with less than 256MB. RAM is a cheap upgrade. If you're too
cheap to spend $50 or so on RAM (and hey, that's your right and
privilege and none of my business how you spend your money, but you
*did* ask), then don't upgrade your operating system because you won't
be pleased with the results.

Ram is cheap and it would cost very little to upgrade to the amount
needed to install XP. Why invest money in XP if you cannot run it
properly or at all?

Even 128MB is very marginal. You would need more than 96 to be useable.
If that is 64+32 then 64+128 would be the minimum I would care to use.
And also be sure the CPU speed is enough - at least 400MHz and more if
you want to use multimedia (but that would be needed for them in 98 too)
