911 Windows XP Help Requested

Can I say HELP??? Yeah...I guess I just did.

It all started with my installation of the IE7 beta,,,yes, I already know
that it wasn't a public beta and it's recommended not to put it on a
"production" machine. That ship has sailed, so consider me experientially
lectured! :)

So...IE7 was a bit of a frustration and I wanted to go back to IE6. I did
the uninstall from Add/Remove and I had IE6 back, but no toolbars worked
(tried Google and the new Windows Live). I couldn't find a way to reinstall
IE6 so I tried doing an in-place upgrade of XP. I only had a Windows XP w/
SP1 disk, but I figured I'd do the updates later so I installed it. That
worked and I started doing the updates. When it came to SP2, it has
continually failed to install. I've tried doing via the Microsoft Update
and even with a SP2 CD and it fails every time.

Does anyone have any clues on what I can try next? I'm stuck with an
unpatched system...

Thanks,

Jeff D.

You might try slipstreaming SP2 into your WinXPSP1 files and create a new
installation CD. Then you can attempt to install with that. Because SP2 was
slipstreamed into it, it will already be at SP2 level. Search this newsgroup
and google groups for "slipstream SP2" and you will come up with lots of
info on how to do it.

Peter,

That link didn't work for me, but I went to the site and did a search and I
found "Autostream" that made slipstreaming quick and easy! :)

Then installation went well and I now have a new issue. When doing updates,
I updated to Microsoft Update and it wanted to install Windows Installer
3.1, but that installation fails. Any ideas???

Thanks,

Jeff
