Can't Fix IE6?

I ran Windows Update for a Windows XP Pro SP2 (with IE6) on my computer that hasn't been
connected to the Internet for 2 years. No updates for IE6 show up.

When I manually download IE6 updates and try to install, I get a popup that says
something like "you must have Internet Explorer 6 to run this update".

Well, I have IE6. (I want to install IE7, but not over a bad install of IE6).

According to this page, WinXP SP2 doesn't have a repair IE6 capability:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
so I have to re-install SP2? Is it safe to re-install? Or will re-installing SP2 cause
features of my computer to revert? What's the safest thing to do here?
